The alternative to PTP mode, USB Mass Storage (UMS) mode, is not supported by all cameras. In this case, "transparently" means that PTP devices do not get block devices. PTP cameras are transparently handled by libgphoto and/or libptp. Digital cameras operating in PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) mode will not work in this regard. In order for some of the utilities listed in the next section to work with flash media, the device in question needs to be mounted as a block device (i.e., listed under /dev). # dd if=/dev/ target_partition of=/home/ user/partition.image To make an image, one can use dd as follows: are likely to be small enough to image in many cases.īe sure to read the man pages for the utilities listed below to verify that they are capable of working with image files. For example, flash memory devices like thumb drives, digital cameras, portable music players, cellular phones, etc. Mount it read-only.Īs an alternative to working with a 'live' partition (mounted or not), it is often preferable to work with an image, provided that the filesystem in question is not too large and that you have sufficient free HDD space to accommodate the image file. Keeping the drive in the freezer with cables connected to the recovering PC works great.ĭo not attempt a filesystem check on a failing drive, as this will likely make the problem worse. A bit of time in the freezer is appropriate, but be careful to avoid bringing the drive from cold to warm too quickly, as condensation will form. (Discuss in Talk:File recovery)Ī tried and true method of improving failing drive reads is to keep the drive cold. This paragraph is mostly untouched since 2009 and might not be applicable to modern drives. Perhaps time for me to do some trimming on these alsoĪlso looks like there is a case for me to be more active in exploring hooking up 2 laptops and use the other one as a backup drive, given that I have a couple that's not in active use and still workable.Reason: Although written on the blog of a data recovery company, it seems there are voices against the "freezer trick" on drives from the last 10 years. I am surprised that the few programs I installed can amount to this much - antivirus, firewall, malwarebtte anti-malware, real player, VMware, to name a few. I usually store most of my files on my D partition and mostly use C for program installation. I would go with a second drive, internal or external for both ease and reliability. Thanks for an indication regarding the compression ratio. Personally if I was give the choice of needing to span an archive/image over 4 or 5 dvd's I'd choose not to considering the difficulty and higher potential for burn errors. My entire XP drive image was never more than about 4.5 Gigs because I stored all media and docs on another drive and tried to keep it as lean as possible so the 1 dvd burn was straight forward. They typically won't compress any more than they are whereas programs, docs etc will compress to 50-70 percent of their original size with default compression. A lot depends on how much media (pics, movies, mp3 etc) is on the drive. Those post compression size numbers are pretty much what you'd expect. Would be good to hear from anyone's experience with EASEUS Todo. So far this seems to be the closest to a working backup that suites my need though not as easy to use as Macrium. So you need a few dvds on hand when you start the burn process or alternatively save toyour hard disk drive first and then repeat it with dvds or copy it to dvds once you read the size of the backup from the one saved to your hard disk. But the drawback is that it does not tell you what is the total size of the final backup when you are ready to burn them to dvds. It it also able to span the backup over several dvds and it also gives various levels of compression options. Last night and this somehow is able to work with the built-in XP's burning software to save the backup to DVDs. I was trying out EASEUS Todo Backup Free edition It's a pity that the list of backup software does not give tge link to the download site. I've had some failing on me just when you need to access some files already stored in it !! USB memory sticks are not cheap or that reliable, depending on the make. Wondered what is the purpose of any backup/ghosting software if you can't save your backup that's larger than one dvd capacity. Looks like the first one solved the question about whether Macrium can span over a few disks.
